 1k Books before KG

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Reading Challenge

Sharing just one book a night gives your child the building blocks for lifelong success!

It doesn't matter if your child is three, or just three months - there's no better time to start than now!
Reading helps build social and emotional skills, sparks creativity and imagination, promotes bonding, and helps kids do well overall in school. Take that motivation, open one book, and get started.

And remember, 1000 is just a number. The goal is to work reading aloud into your regular routine, and let the magic of stories do the rest.

2025 Summer Reading

SRP

Come celebrate the start of Summer Reading at one of our kick-off events at the Minden Park and Zephyr Cove Library!
Join us to find out more information about all the amazing summer happenings at the library, register for the Summer Reading Program, meet the Douglas County Mounted Posse (Minden Park only), and more. There will be special Summer Reading bags for the kick-off events, while supplies last.

Kickoff in Minden will be held at Minden Park on May 31 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
The Minden Library will be closed during this time, and will re-open at 1:00 p.m.

Kick-off in Zephyr Cove will be held at the Zephyr Cove Library on June 3 from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Join us at the Minden Library on June 7th for a special performance by Tintabulations Handbells Ensemble at 2:00 p.m.

This year’s program, Bein' Green, is inspired by the beloved song performed by Kermit the Frog and explores themes of self-acceptance, growth and the beauty of embracing one's uniqueness. For more information about Tintabulations, visit their website at www.tintabulations.com
This year’s Summer Reading program runs from May 31st through July 31st.
If you are unable to attend a kick-off event to register in person, you may register online on the library’s
Beanstack webpage at douglascountynv.beanstack.org to log reading and earn prizes on your Beanstack account.

All of these family-friendly events are free.  The Summer Reading Program is sponsored and made possible in part by the Friends of the Douglas County Public Library, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records, and Kiwanis of Lake Tahoe.
